Most Green cleaners will have a green seal of approval saying that it is better for the environment then some chemical cleaners. Please don't think that the green cleaning products will not cause any harm or irritation to skin or your health. This is better way to clean. Read the labels of each product. The biggest thing to look for is the dyes and additives in the products. Make sure the products are free from phosphates and chlorides.

Below are some of the products that have found effective and easy on the environment. Also keep an eye on our upcoming events for green cleaning seminars and also classes on how to make your own green cleaning products.

Clorox Green Works Glass Cleaner This is a natural glass cleaner that is of course water based. The other ingredients that are used in this product are coconut-based cleaning agent, soda ash, and corn-based ethanol. It does not contain any phosphates or bleaches. It uses biodegradable ingredients and has never been tested on animals. You can find this product in most stores for around $3.00.

Seventh Generation Natural Shower Cleaner This product is fresher scented shower cleaner but still is quite strong. The cleaner is water based and also contains hydrogen peroxide, green mandarin, and other citrus oils. This product is formulated to be safe for your family and the environment. It does not contain harsh fumes and is a biodegradable alternative to conventional petroleum-based cleaners. You can find this product in most stores for under$4.00.

Method Hand Soap method makes a great line of green products as well and I believe is exclusive to Target stores. There are scented soaps and also natural. They do not contain triclosan and is biodegradable. You can find this product in Target for around $3.00

Seventh Generation Laundry Detergent - This product is green in many ways. First by using a high efficient washer you can use about 1/3 of the water you would use on a top load washer. You will use less soap helping you save money as well. This is a low foaming detergent and removes water hardness to improve cleaning power. This non-toxic, biodegradable, and hypo-allergenic product can be found in many stores for around $15.00.

Clorox Green Works Natural Dilutable Cleaner - This product is used for wood floors and furniture polish. Has many of the same ingredients all the Green Works line. Citrus oils and coconut oils make up the cleaning power for this product. Clorox came out with the Green Works line because because they know how harmful their products are to people and the environment. You can find this cleaner in most stores for around $2.60.

Clorox Green Works All-Purpose Cleaner - This product is used for grease, grime, dirt, and can be used on multiple surfaces. Surfaces include counter tops, sinks, toilets, and cooktops. This has a nice tangerine scent and may not be recommended for people who with allergies. You can find this cleaner in most stores for around $2.80.

Seventh Generation Automatic Dish Washing Gel - This non-toxic, no chlorine, no phosphates cleaner is made from water along with sodium silicate, lemon, and other citrus oils. Using a green product in your dishwasher is important because if you microwave your food on a plate that was cleaned chemically, you are heating up those chemicals into your food. This product can be found in most stores for around $3.80.

Method Dish Soap - This product doesn't contain dyes or perfumes. It does uses corn alcohol, table salt, citric acid, aloe vera, and vitamin E. You can find this dish soap in your local Target store for around $3.30. These products should be kept out of reach of children just like all of your cleaning supplies. Even though these products are green, we still recommend treating them just like all of your cleaning supplies. Please call us at the Museum of Visual Materials if you have further questions regarding green cleaning. 605-271-9500.
